Peñalba de Santiago, perched on the side of a hill, minimised under the high, white marble crags from which it takes its name, is the best and best preserved example of popular architecture in the mountains of the Bierzo region. The village is concentrated and compact, grouped around the church.
Peñalba, with its cluster of houses huddled around the church, in the centre of a majestic landscape and a silent medieval atmosphere that envelops it all, has always elicited praise and fine words from all those who have visited it.
